The Chinese Women Cookbooks Writers is an ongoing cultural research project exploring the intersections of food writing and women’s lived experiences. Centering on six Chinese women cookbook writers from different periods and backgrounds, the project reconstructs their archives to propose alternative narratives beyond established histories.
The cookbooks of Li Wen, Yang Buwei, Mrs. Wu of Pujiang, Zeng Yi, Lin Xiangru, and Yu Ruomu reflect diverse concerns—from everyday culinary techniques and cross-cultural exchange to nutrition and the symbolic meanings of food. These texts serve not only as practical manuals but also as vessels of emotion, intellect, and memory, tracing the shifting lives, identities, and eras of their authors. Through the processes of organizing, writing, and archiving, the project seeks to recover what has been forgotten—or nearly forgotten—at the edges of history: the luminous traces of women’s labor and knowledge-making in the everyday.
